Roof grants changed profoundly in 2026. For years, Belgian homeowners could count on regional grants to fund part of the insulation or renovation of their roof. This year, all three regions revised their schemes, often by cutting them back or switching to loans. As a result, many owners no longer know what they are entitled to. Here is an overview, based on the information available on 5 October 2026.
Important
The rules change quickly and depend on your situation. Before signing a quote that relies on financial support, always check the conditions on your region’s official website or with an energy advice office.
Wallonia: the end of Habitation grants
The temporary Habitation grants scheme ended on 30 September 2026. Work had to be completed and applications submitted, including the invoice, by that date at the latest. Depending on the income category, the scheme provided a grant for roof insulation, replacing the covering, upgrading the roof timbers or rainwater drainage.
Since 1 October 2026: Rénopack and Rénoprêt
Direct grants have been replaced by two subsidised loans:
- Rénopack, for owner-occupiers in the lowest and middle income categories: an interest-free loan with a reduction in the amount to be repaid that varies with income.
- Rénoprêt, for higher incomes, landlords and co-ownerships.
The new system targets the least energy-efficient homes first. A recent energy audit is in principle required, and the project must improve the home’s EPB rating. A stand-alone roofing project that is not part of an overall energy improvement plan is therefore no longer automatically supported. Applications go through Wallonia’s social credit bodies and energy advice offices. Our page on roof grants in Wallonia explains the new scheme in detail.
Brussels: Renolution grants suspended
Renolution grants, which funded roof insulation among other things, were frozen in 2024 and are no longer awarded for invoices from 2025 and 2026. The Brussels government has announced a future system of interest-free loans, with no confirmed timetable or terms to date. The specific support for small roofing jobs has also been withdrawn.
Brussels residents still have several options, however:
- 6% VAT for renovating homes more than ten years old;
- the Ecoreno loan, at a preferential rate, for energy-saving work;
- some municipal grants, which vary from one municipality to another;
- free advice from Homegrade, the Region’s housing advice centre.

Flanders: Mijn VerbouwPremie refocused
In Flanders, Mijn VerbouwPremie for roofing work still exists, but since 1 March 2026 it has been largely reserved for owner-occupiers in income categories 3 and 4, the lowest incomes. Categories 1 and 2 no longer have access to it for roof insulation.
- The grant covers a percentage of the invoice excluding VAT, higher for category 4 than for category 3, with a cap per application.
- The invoice must reach a minimum amount.
- Renovating the covering, roof timbers or gutters is only supported if the roof is insulated at the same time, with a thermal resistance Rd of at least 4.5 m²K/W.
- A supplement is available for removing a covering or underlay containing asbestos, combined with insulation.
- The work must be carried out by a contractor.
For other incomes, the Mijn VerbouwLening loan remains a worthwhile option. See our page on roof grants in Flanders.
What still applies everywhere: 6% VAT
This is often the most significant form of support, and it has not changed: renovation work on a private home more than ten years old, invoiced directly by a registered contractor, in principle qualifies for 6% VAT instead of 21%. On a roof renovation costing €25,000 excluding VAT, the saving exceeds €3,700. Our article on reduced VAT for roofing work sets out the conditions.

How to prepare your application
- Check your eligibility on your region’s official website or with an advice office before signing.
- Ask for a detailed quote, with the insulated area, the insulation material and its thermal resistance.
- Have the audit carried out where it is required, particularly in Wallonia.
- Keep the evidence: technical data sheets, installation photos, detailed invoice.
- Meet the deadlines for submitting the application after the final invoice.
At Toiture En Ligne, we draw up our quotes and invoices so that they contain all the information needed for a grant application, and we give you photos of every stage.
Roof grants and smart planning
Because support is increasingly linked to income, energy audits and an improved EPB rating, it pays to look at your roofing work as part of a wider renovation plan. Insulating the roof first lays the groundwork for later steps such as a heat pump or new windows. A sensible order avoids doing work twice and improves the chances of your project qualifying for the roof grants or loans available.
Frequently asked questions about roof grants
I had my work done in September 2026 in Wallonia: can I still apply for the grant?
The Habitation grants scheme required the complete application, including the invoice, to be submitted by 30 September 2026 at the latest. After that date, only the new subsidised loan system applies. Check with the Walloon public service for your specific case.
Do municipal grants still exist?
Some municipalities, in Brussels as well as in Wallonia and Flanders, offer their own grants, for example for insulation or green roofs. They change frequently: check with the planning or environment department of your municipality.
Can a roof without insulation receive support?
In most schemes, no. Support is aimed at energy performance: renovating the covering is generally only supported if it is combined with sufficient insulation.
In summary
Roof grants are not what they used to be, but support still exists, especially for lower incomes, and 6% VAT remains a major lever everywhere in Belgium. Before starting your project, review your situation and ask for a detailed quote. Our teams support you with your roof insulation or roof renovation in Brussels, Walloon Brabant, Hainaut and Flanders.
